I was twelve back then.
It was the night before Christmas and a lot of my relatives abroad came home to the Philippines to celebrate Christmas with us. We decided to spend it in one of my Uncle’s house which we never thought has a story to tell.
A bunch of us kids and teenagers couldn’t sleep yet and so we all decided to do something interesting. And since one of my cousin was just talking about Ouija boards, we thought of improvising and made one from a piece of paper, and used an old coin as medium for the “encounter”.
My older cousins knew the rituals and so they began. i was the youngest back then and all i could do is to follow what they had to say and observe everything. The first few minutes, i should say, is quite boring. But the my sleepy body was awakened when finally we got a response from what seems to be a “spirit”.
"What’s your name?", we asked. The coin moved to the letter "J" and nothing folowed. A lot of us were skeptic as to how the coin moved. i was trying to peep with my face on the floor to check whether there is any obvious effort from any of the fingers on top of the coin to move it. There was none. And all of us seemed pretty convincing that no one was just putting up a scam.
We went on with the conversation and asked how old he or she is. “4” it answered back. The coin suddenly went in a swift back and forth motion from “J” to “4”. I started to feel a bit scared, but at the back of my mind, it could still be just one of my cousins playing a trick on us. But as i look on everyone’s face, everybody is just as dumbstricken as i was.
More questions went on, unanswered, but when we asked whether he/she personally knows us. He gave a quick reply of a “yes”. We then asked him/her to point out who among us is the eldest, and who among us is the youngest. the coin quickly flipped towards me, and we just pushed the coin back to the center. now it is becoming a bit more
With all of us in a heightened excitement now, all of us dared him/her to show a sign that he/she is actually there with us. And what creeped us out is the minute we finished talking, there, on my cousin’s lap, was a shadow. it was a small hand, with the thumb and index finger extended, as if pointing at something or somebody. We were still calm at that time, thinking that that shadow could just be a part of our clothing or anything that is blocking the light source. we checked the light bulb and path the light took to reach my cousins lap, none was obstructing it. we all tried to move but the shadow remained immobile.
We all got a bit scared and so we decided to bid goodbye to whoever we were talking to. It did let us go without hesitation. and that was a relief.
The next morning, when we were having breakfast, we were all talking about what happened the night before, trying to force each other to admit having played a prank on us. But everyone was just as steadfast as i was. No one played a trick on a anybody. but as our parents overheard what we were talking about, they all just told us that it couldn’t be true and that someone must have just made a little joke on us. But when it was my aunt who heard about the story, she suddenly said “HE IS STILL HERE”.
With a surprised look, i asked, “who is still here?” Well none of us(cousins) knew that we had another cousin much older than we were who died a long time ago. they called him “Junior”. And he wasn’t 4 years old when he passed away, but just 4 days old. And remember the shadow that was on y cousin’s lap? he was born with just the thumb and the index finger, hence the shape of the shadow seemed like he was pointing to something.
After what has been said, we all just sat quietly, had breakfast and never dared to establish another communication with a spirit again.
